Service History

In 1995, the CTA placed an experimental order of 65 low floor buses from New Flyer. Low floor buses eliminate steps at the front and rear doors, making it easier for the elderly and disabled to board. A flip-out ramp at the front of the bus allowed for the boarding of wheelchairs.

Retirement of the 5800-series began gradually in early 2008, with retirement complete by February 28, 2009.
