History
In 1995, the CTA placed an experimental order of 65 low floor buses from New Flyer. Low floor buses eliminate steps at the front and rear doors, making it easier for the elderly and disabled to board. A flip-out ramp at the front of the bus allows for the boarding of wheelchairs.
Retirement of the 5800-series began gradually in early 2008, with the entire series expected to be gone by the end of the year. As of April 17, 2008, a total of 60 5800-series vehicles remained in service.
